I <br>bought a bike tyre pump which I had to return because it was faulty. Got <br>a replacement one (I would have preferred money back but the sales <br>assistant was very insistent on replacement), which I don&#39;t use as it&#39;s <br>impossible to get onto the valves without a huge amount of effort. In my <br>opinion, fluid bike tyre hand pumps are only good if your tyre is <br>entirely flat.<p>My Fluid bike computer died on me a few days ago too. It&#39;s only about 6 <br>weeks old and I&#39;ve done just over 350km on it. It just refuses to work, <br>except for the clock. I replaced the battery. Still no luck and another <br>out of pocket expense. I&#39;ve just phoned the shop which has asked me to <br>bring it in to see what the problem is. Another trip out there and back <br>(remember the earlier one with my bike tyre pump!). They&#39;ll insist on <br>replacing it for me. I want money back this time. I think I might take <br>out the hand pump too. Piece of rubbish it is.<p>Things like this really put a sour taste in my mouth. It's the best quality, it's seasonal, and you're supporting Australia and Australians prosperity. The beautiful and incredibly <br>talented Sophie Serafino is organising a new festival called the Every <br>Woman Festival and she invited me to be on the committee. How could I <br>refuse? I love Sophie; I love her integrity, determination and grit so <br>how could I go wrong being on her team, in an effort to unite and help <br>women? Impossible!<p>The Every Woman Festival is starting out in 2010 with the launch of a <br>new website at <a href="http://www.everywomanfestival.com.au">http://www.everywomanfestival.com.au</a> and initially, it <br>will offer an online television series featuring some fabulous female <br>identities divulging their secrets and insights as to how they got where <br>they are today. The first sessions include Melinda Schneider - popular <br>Australian country singer/songwriter and Bianca Dye, Australian national <br>media professional and other fabulous women of style and substance (see <br>the website for more info). The ongoing series will feature women from <br>all walks of life.<p>The emphasis will also be on highlighting women&#39;s charities, with an <br>online auction aimed at raising funds for Lou&#39;s Place, a women&#39;s refuge <br>in Sydney&#39;s Kings Cross and FOCTHA, a charity in Malawi supporting <br>African women who find themselves raising their grandchildren orphaned <br>by HIV/AIDS. I didn&#39;t really feel like a chat <br>with a stranger, but you know, loneliness is a terrible thing - and I <br>extended my empathy. He&#39;d admitted to being a loner - &quot;maybe like you&quot; <br>he said... I tried to explain that I liked to sit by myself cause I <br>can&#39;t hear over the music and it&#39;s just easier that way - so I don&#39;t <br>have to decipher conversation I can&#39;t hear and I don&#39;t want to yell. <br>Alas, his timing was just wrong. The miners and currawongs have no hope at all but are putting up a <br>very valiant effort. The cuckoo is the size of an eagle. I thought it <br>was at first. Most Australians according to talk back radio seem to be genuinely shocked and disgusted at the reaction by Harry Connick Jnr. Let me say, I am NOT one of them.<br /><br />This is the type of humour (and I use the term loosely) for which Hey Hey is renowned. They laugh at anything which is the standard gamut of joke fodder in Australia; fat people, men dressed as women, women's body shape and other more nefarious items such as (rarely seen) black face.<br /><br />Now, don't get me wrong; I understand, but do not condone, the reaction of a vast portion of the Australian audience. It's one of ignorance. Most Australians are completely unaware that the black face is a symbol of black oppression and humiliation in America. However, as the law would say, ignorance is no defence. I'm not eloquent enough to explain the entire history of blackface, but this wikipedia link will give a good introduction.<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface</a><br /><br />I remember the original skit from last night's show when it first appeared twenty years ago and I wondered how they could be so ignorant back then - especially as the performers are all apparently intelligent educated men (doctors)! To see it again last night, I just knew Harry Connick Jnr would be horrified. I was embarrassed for him, for Australia and for the apparently iconic show Hey Hey It's Saturday. Unlike some, I am entirely unafraid to admit I love the show and have done for 22 years. It was there for me like some new friend when I was first starting at the Conservatorium. I remember a young Brooke, Caroline, Stephanie and Eric, plus an almost impossibly handsome young Ridge and how glamourous it all seemed to me.<br /><br />I guess back then, it didn't occur to me that these people, actors and their characters would be such a huge part of my life's timeline. As they grew and developed, so did I. Which brings me to my point of this blog. The episode I watched two days ago was probably the most poignant one I've ever seen. Brooke was lamenting to her nemesis Stephanie - who was in fine and unusual empathic mode towards Brooke - about how noone tells you that it all goes so quickly. I could almost feel it as though Katherine Kelly Lang was saying it herself, rather than just Brooke the character.<br /><br />It is true you know. Life does go by so quickly. I'm feeling it too. I look back to my 20s and wonder how I survived. So young and innocent. While I was trying to survive, my dreams got left by the wayside, as I tried to figure out how to achieve them with circumstances against me.<br /><br />A lot of it was about having fun and wasting my youth, but much of it was about little confidence and/or not really believing I deserved happiness.<br /><br />With age comes an urgency to live life the way you want. You realise how precious it all is, how fleeting it all is, for the people you love, the ones you know, and most of all for yoursef.<br /><br />So, I guess what I am trying to say is that life is short. If you have a passion, please follow it. "Remember the Time". I think it's Michael at his best. It's a sexy song and his personality, the true essence, just shines through...at least, that's how I feel it. It's very sad to lose him so suddenly, and it was long before his time.<br /><br />I'm incredibly sad to hear about Farrah. She was a beautiful woman who left a big impression on a little girl in the 70s. It's sad to have seen her, and her family, suffer for such a long time, but at least she has some peace from her pain now.<br /><br />My heart also goes out to the man, and his family, who was inadvertently killed today in Sydney. I haven't heard the details because it's been overshadowed by the two deaths above, but I understand he was shot in the head by thieves. It may have been accidental. It may have been on purpose. I don't know. All I know, is that he was in the wrong place, the wrong time, and his life has been snuffed out by boys who have their whole lives ahead of them.<br /><br />Life is so precious. It's why I get so sad. I just feel like I haven't done enough yet. To say I'm not disappointed wouldn't be true, but I have to accept it and move on. I would have loved to have been able to connect with other Roxy Music fans around the world, but looking positively, I don't have to deal with their scrutiny and in some cases I'm sure, scorn, of my interpretation on a much beloved track either. I also don't have to compromise on doing the track in any other way but how I would like to do it, so that's another plus. I guess the producers of the project were looking for something else.<br /><br />Another plus is that I can get back to working on my album! An opportunity to prepare and submit my own version of Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home A Hearthache" arose and there was no chance of my refusing this challenge! It's been an exciting week concocting my own version of this song and I think what I've come up with is a fitting tribute to the original. Unfortunately, my mother is horrified at the thought of her daughter singing about a blow up doll, but you can't please everyone.<br /><br />Now, whether or not the song will be included on this American three cd set tribute is another matter. I was given the brief of dark and powerful. I think I've achieved this, but taste is taste and one person's delight is another's disdain.<br /><br />Shall keep my fingers crossed for inclusion, as it will close the first CD of the tribute trilogy and it would be fantastic to reach out to the Roxy Music fans worldwide in this forum and particularly, performing such a powerful and slightly disturbing song - a favourite of many Roxy Music fans. It's one of my usual heartwrenching ditties. Quite a bluesy rock feel to it, with a bit of lush electronic synthesiser sounds thrown in. It's one of my favourite songs and is actually written about a few people all rolled into the one storyline. You'll just have to guess who they are! Tee hee.<br /><br />This song is a difficult one to record vocally as there's so many dynamics in it. The verses are quiet and melancholy and the lead into the chorus is uber-mad and pissed off loud and high. Last night, I found an old box of newspaper clippings and exam results and delved into the contents. My old Grade 7 cello exam result paper was in there. Grade 7 is the last big one before the AMUSA and LMUSA. I did this when I was 15. At the time, I was so impressed with my talent that I was horrified to discover I'd only been graded a "B" out of an A B C D E rating. Actually, I seem to remember I was mortified! <br /><br />It was quite amusing last night, reading back the examiner's comments with my slightly more mature outlook these days (note, I use the word "slightly").<br /><br />I see why I wasn't given an "A". I didn't even attempt to play some of the scales - the dominant 7th and diminished 7th 3 octave scales were refused point blank. How I laughed when I read that, as I never was very good (and I'm still not) at remembering scale names and applying chord names to chords. Yes, I should have studied and learned them. Oh well. The irony is, dom 7ths and dim 7ths are my two of my absolute favourite chords in my songwriting now.<br /><br />It was really interesting looking deeper into the comments. Not having thought about it for such a long time, I was almost instantly transported back to that moment in time. My aural was marked as very good with some minor hesitancy and sight reading was - "very accurate and musical". Actually, I've always been very good at sight reading...maybe cause I like exploring new stuff so much.<br /><br />My technical studies were "obviously well prepared" with a light hearted feel in difficult bowing styles. The pieces were marked as musical and apparently I had done extremely well in keeping on going through a Beethoven Sonata even though the pianist had got lost! I don't remember that part...must have been too traumatic! LOL.<br /><br />The examiner suggested that I didn't rush into the AMusA exam. When I read that at the time, I took it as an insult, but that was proof that I wasn't ready to go through it. When I was young, I just didn't have the emotional maturity. I thought I did, but now, I realise these things can only be learned with life experience and heartbreak. While I had great tone, and played what I heard with my interpretation of musicality, I didn't know fully how to feel and express the music, the feeling, the passion because I'd never had those real feelings.<br /><br />So, Mr Roberts, I forgive you for giving me a "B". You were right! LOL.<br /><br />Moral of the story? After the bright idea hit, I decided to pick up my cello and accompany myself with the view to doing some gigs that way.<br /><br />Hmmmm, it all seemed very good in theory. An accomplished cellist, songwriter and vocalist, adept at all three, combining all three, it just had to work, didn't it? After three hours of trying, it seems that not everything is possible after all. <br /><br />I think if my music was a little simpler in rhythm and harmony, it might have worked really well. Having listened to other cellist/vocalists, their music is much simpler, much less complicated with extremely simple accompaniment on the cello. I wanted the rich lushness of my chords to come through, but what works on piano, doesn't quite work on cello as well. 7ths & 2nds work great on piano, whereas a cello is happier with 3rds and 5ths. <br /><br />Well, it was an interesting experiment nonetheless, and while it might not be something I'll pursue with my current songs, it might be a nice avenue to explore with some more folky, bluesy, artiste-y stuff in the future. Only problem is, I have two choices for this song and it's perplexing me no end! <br /><br />Originally, I wrote this song in 4/4, but I also discovered it works really well in 6/8. It changes the song's feel completely. 4/4 is quite r&b and the 6/8 gives a real bluesy edge to it.<br /><br />I don't like these dilemmas as I really enjoy both versions of the song. After releasing the song "Seize the Day" as it is on the "I'm Alive" EP, I regret the arrangement I did, and wish I had approached it very differently. "Seize the Day" is such a great song and at times, I don't think I did it justice. I really don't want to do this to "Rest of My Days". Fingers crossed I'll get it together.<br /><br />I like very much most of the songs I write, but there are a few that I absolutely love. Rest of My Days is one of those. I was using a multi layer of the same midi track using different instruments on the tracks. With so much going on, I'm finding my recording time for this album is decreasing. Have to change it around.<br /><br />I'm working on a little bossanova number. It was untitled for quite some time, but I've now settled on a name for it; "The Dream". <br /><br />The arrangement is quite ethereal and surprise, surprise...dreamy. I'm using quite a few synthesiser emulating instruments in this one which I absolutely love. It's so much fun trawling the internet for new instruments, discovering them and imagining how to use them to their best effect. Such a VSTi is in "The Dream". It's a fantastic string instrument VSTi. Unfortunately, I've just discovered that it's playing havoc with my multitracking midi software. There's something not quite right in it and I can't figure out what it is. It's sending my other midi files, audio and loops out of whack. I hope I can get it sorted as I really love the pizzicato violin effect. Having been thinking about it, I could probably render that particular sequence as an audio file and place it in the arrangement that way, rather than using vsti's on multiple midi tracks. Will try that later tonight!<br /><br />So far, the album is coming very slowly, but I figure, there really is no rush. After weeks of experimenting and not really finding the mark, I hit the perfect arrangement for the chorus of "The Weather". When you write a song, you have some idea of how you want it to sound in your mind as a final product, and when you come to sit down and pad it out with an instrumental arrangement, it can come easily or it can take quite some time to find the right feel or groove. <br /><br />"The Weather" is a funky-ish number, but the lyrics are laced with melancholy and quite dark. I needed something to reflect that in the chorus. I'd come up with a nice verse riff and the chorus was proving to be very tricky because I had a very strong funked up bass line that I didn't want to lose with over arranging. After weeks of fiddling, I've come up with a simple piano line and a synth ostinato keeping a steady rhythm going. Keeps it really ethereal and quite haunting yet funky at the same time. Last night, when I finally did have a few moments spare to fiddle around with stuff I discovered that my mic setup has decided to stop working. This is my new mic setup, which originated from an old reliable setup which has now become dodgy, so even though it was much better than my last setup for the EP, it was very hit and miss. It was the last straw last night discovering that my mic input didn't work (I know, it's just a simple matter of taking it to an electronics whiz and getting some circuits soldered) but that in itself will cost at least $100 so I've decided to bite the bullet and buy myself a whole new reliable setup - which I've done today and pick it up on Friday. How exciting! It's something I've been looking into for a while and now I've done it.<br /><br />I think not having a reliable mic setup was a big reason behind my album procrastination.<br /><br />You never quite know how a new piece of technology will work, whether it will deliver the result you want. In my mind's film clip, instead of the show girls, I imagine a chorus line of (ummm, heterosexual) men in the form of someone like Antonio Sabato Jnr walking around me while I sing this on stage, but alas, I only have ears for music.<br /><br />My lyrics of this song are filled with sexual angst...of course, a man could never live up to the thrill music gives me. Something about two clashing notes that send my senses into overload. My earlier life as a cellist gave me the opportunity to play and experience some of the most exciting music that's ever been composed, that of the 20th century composers such as Shostakovich, Martinu and Stravinsky. So, I wrote a song about it. When I used to gig this song around the traps with my acoustic duo, I had a rather obvious question once "huh? but where's the dissonance in the song?" (the question came from a drummer who once did a session for a very internationally famous group and I think likes to cling on to that glory).<br /><br />However, my question is, do I really have to write dissonance into a song about dissonance? Do I really have to be that obvious? Hmmm, I grant my listeners with a bit more imagination and intelligence. The song is more about the feeling that I get from a little dissonance, how it sends my body a quiver and my ears a tingling and well, you get the drift. I hope that it will not be dubbed as banal as Alanis Morrisette's "Ironic" which had no trace of ironic content in the lyric, although I guess the fact that a song written about ironic moments in life without irony is slightly ironic...but even that's pushing it.<br /><br />As I write, I am mixing the intro to A Little Dissonance, which may be the very first song on the new album. It's probably because I've listened to rock a lot throughout my life, and many debut albums sound really dodgy. To me, that's a really endearing quality that I love and gives the musicians a slightly more tangible quality.<br /><br />I suppose that why I'm feeling ok about producing another set of songs for myself. It's not that I'm arrogant enough to think that I have all the answers. Far from it, but I'm taking what life is giving me and running with it. With input from others, I'm sure my next offering would be different and possibly better arranged, creative ideas I'd never thought of would arise and so on. It would be lovely, but the more you add to the mix, the more complicated it all becomes. I quite like being in control of my musical destiny now, and I am thoroughly enjoying the little discoveries I make every day.<br /><br />As I've mentioned before, my EP was a bit learning experience and it's helped me greatly to know how to approach things for a better result. My vocal recordings will be better, which I am extremely happy about. I also have a better idea of how I want it to sound overall, and know that I don't have to put something out in the hope that it might appeal to people. This time it's just about a musical journey and it's good to feel comfortable in that, because I can afford to be more creative.<br /><br />Work has begun on my first full length track for the album, "The Weather". It might not be the first track in running order, it's just the first one that I've begun (apart form the secret hidden track which is finished...). Already it goes along with a nice little groove that actually has me bobbing my head while I listen to playback. Probably has something to do with the fact that he was usually on our record player every other weekend and I have a happy memory of my father dancing around doing his little "de dah dah doo de dah" dance as he walked through the loungeroom with George in the background.<br /><br />What I found so amusing and touching too, was his audience. They just loved him. It was a bunch of 50-60 somethings, all up out of their chairs, doing their little "on the spot" dances. The women in the audience were completely under his control - smitten by his romantic lyrics and smooth gorgeous vocals - leaning out to touch him and grab his hand. The highlight of the show was when one overcome by lust, grey haired granny, jumped onto the stage and started gyrating up against George. The look on Mr Benson's face was priceless. His eyes popped out of his head and he politely sidled away, eyes pleading to security for help. I'm not sure that he'd ever quite experienced something like before I'm sure his usual performance stage is taller than granny leaping allows. The camera panned away subtly, and when it returned, George was gyrating-grannyless again. What a shame. Hmmm, I thought as I watched...what great bass. Hmmm, hints of funk and soul, but still not quite either of those genres. Then I thought...hmmm, I like that bass. I like that sound. Then I remembered back to my teens and listening to David's 80s stuff on rotation on my record player, like Loving The Alien, Absolute Beginners and the like. Hmmm, you know, that must have had some effect on me cause as I was listening, I could hear traces of chord progressions and slightly unusual song arrangements that occasionally pop up in my music. Now, in no way am I comparing my sound with David Bowie's, goodness no, but I can see now some influence from him in there.<br /><br />This also made my poor old brain tick a bit harder. What is my sound? Where do I fit in? Why do I have to pigeon hole myself into one particular genre? I guess that's where the Glamaphonic side of things will allow me to expand my musical horizons. I do have a lot of ideas that I haven't really delved into yet, so why place boundaries on myself? I'm never going to have mass appeal, so I may as well push myself into my darker more experimental side. Speaking as a fan, of the most exciting factors for me in Roxy Music was their experimental stuff. Their music didn't quite fit any one particular genre. I suppose now it's coined Glam, but at the time, it was just good innovative stuff. Belinda was a talented actress and singer (rarely do the two combine) whose life was cut short at 32 after an heroic 8 year struggle with cancer, which she succumbed to yesterday. It just doesn't seem right that someone can battle for most of their adult life against an insideous disease that eventually wins and overtakes life. Throughout her fight, Belinda was the public epitome of strength and resolve. It's impossible not to admire. Generally, I like to take the most complicated and unusual route possible. This isn't really by choice. It's just the way my mind works I'm afraid. <br /><br />Hence, I am in the process of organising the launch for my EP I'm Alive, quite a few months after its release. This also means that I am tackling the lack of band situation. As much as I enjoy being the centre of attention (only occasionally), even I think my singing the EP acapella would be a tad boring and over the top in self indulgence.<br /><br />Finding the right band is probably the most difficult thing of all things to do in organising this EP launch.<br /><br />I'm working on some ideas now. I've been sending out feelers to the musos I know, asking them to send people my way. There doesn't seem to be a huge field to choose from at the moment, but I shall stay proactive and patient.<br /><br />Alas, I feel my ideal of having a great band that cares about me and the music might be a pipe dream now. Sadly, this also means that I won't be able to gig as much as I'd like as I will more than likely be employing session musos per gig. What it does guarantee though, is my music being performed exactly how I want it, and one of the most glamourous sounds you'll ever hear.<br /><br />Venue has almost been decided and will be in the inner west of Sydney. The star attraction of the show for me was Ted Nugent. Says it like it is, in his world. While I may not agree with all of his lifestyle choices, a gal could learn a lot from a man like him, and his unswerving self confidence. He said something extremely apt which I think I will claim as my new shield. "There is no greater authority on my music in this world, than me". Ahh yes, they assured me that only my email setups would change and the website would stay in tact. Uh huh. I woke up the next day to discover that my website had gone, disappeared, kaput! I've spent the past few days trying to get some sort of order back to the website, but there are still things missing...<br /><br />The WORST thing though was tonight when I discovered that my mailing list, the GLAMAGRAM has disappeared. Every single one of my lovely little Glamettes have been lost in cyberspace, and I'll probably never find you again. I can't even send you a personal email as I don't have your email addresses saved apart from on my weblist. What am I going to do!??? Once the basic track is down, I put a vocal line which is a roughly recorded vocal track to show me just where everything is put together in the song. It's like a tracing line that I can work around.<br /><br />The tragic thing is, because I'm so relaxed when I'm doing those temporary vocal guides, they're some of my best singing, but generally, they can't be used because I haven't recorded them properly.<br /><br />Now I'm beginning the the real vocal line recording process, & I'm stuffing everything up as I go along, a plane goes over, the dog comes in and trips over a lead, not to mention my having a coughing fit from my nervous dry throat..yikes. It's a mess. The one good thing I took away from the Ayelle experience, was Paul's 5 string bass. It really opened a whole new world to me as far as bass sounds go. I never realised how having that extra string could sound so good, so heavy and earth shuddering. I have to declare my bass love for all the world. I don't care who knows about it. This little track is turning into a real pearler the more I work on it and along with Seize the Day could be one of the cd highlights. Of course, they're all highlights for me...lol.<br /><br />Doing this CD by myself is definitely challenging my creative abilities (in a very good way!). One of the most enjoyable, and at the same time difficult things, is to come up with a bass line that is interesting, gives a great groove, holds the song together as a foundation, but isn't overbearing. I'm having such fun building bass lines for these songs -- most of my time is spent on getting the bass right, as without it, it's like building a house on sand. I guess it's a real insight into my psyche. Some might call me strange, but I think having emotional extremes can help to make you a balanced person, and that is definitely reflected in the bunch of songs I'm laying down. It also means that I won't fit into any mammoth commercial success, but that's ok. I've accepted it now. Lol.<br /><br />Anyway, Seize the Day is a hint of the mental anguish I put myself through every day. One moment, I believe that just about anything is possible, the next, I'll hit rock bottom, completely inconsolable realising that my dreams won't come true and I've wasted my life. Maybe everyone feels that way at some point. I don't know, but it would be nice to have a rest from it for a change. Just switch off.<br /><br />Of course, all this is at the fore as I currently record Seize The Day. I'm delving into the all sorts of gorgeous melancholy musical moods and textures. For this song, I've introduced an instrument called the Mellotron, and let me tell you, it certainly lives up to its name. It gives the song an old worldly nostalgic sound, with the sound of a string ensemble playing on an old 78rpm record. There was one particular section in the chorus of Seize the Day in which I used the Mellotron, and it actually brought tears to my eyes. It was just the mellotron...no vocals, no nothing..<A HREF="http://www.glamaphonic.com/blog/seizethedaymello.mp3">just the Mellotron playing my chord progression</A>. To me it just sounded so beautiful. I hope that when I eventually release it out to the public that some of you might like it too.<br /><br />While the Mellotron gives the track a certain sadness, underneath I've placed a nice bass groove, so the song has a bit of life in it. By entertaining thoughts of a CD title, I trick my mind into believing that the CD will be recorded (because in these early stages, it all seems to overwhelming and completely daunting), and in a way, it's an informal goal. I'm trying very hard to think of positives, as I bog down in the negatives far too much, and I wonder how entertaining that mustn't be for everyone. What a downer. Anyway, my title is related to my outlook on the world, and how it means everything to me, but in the end it's nothing, and the double meaning of when you have everything, what exactly does it mean anyway? Not much once you're gone.
